There were no masks this time, but still no audience either. She told them there would be extreme risks and gambles this season, and that they'd start competing right away. The first group was Travis, Derek F, Frenchie, Xavier, and Derek F was the first to enter the habitat. It looked like Frenchie definitely held back and held the door - he'd be aware of that curse (although it was broken by Tamar on Celebs 2, it still holds for civilian BB). The memory photo wall was already in place with all 16 pics, which caught the attention of everyone as they entered. The other groups were Azah, Britini, Alyssa, Whitney; then Brent, Christian, Derek X, Kyland; and finally Hannah, Claire, Tiffany, Sarah. Each entry group did a Kickoff comp in which they had to arrange five plexiglass layers with varying details to match a travel poster. Groups that already competed watched from the new backyard loft area, or Dr Will's porch as I'll enjoy calling it. Winners of each group became team captains and competed later for HOH. The posters and winners of each group were: Group 1 Have-not Pool, won by Frenchie Group 2 BB Beach Club, won by Whitney Group 3 Blindside Beach, won by Christian Group 4 Betray Showmance, won by Claire Julie told them they'd be playing in teams (previously announced to us as lasting for four weeks). The team captains drafted their teams by picking one of two choices, based on quick video intro snippets, and she told them their assigned team names. The finals rosters are: Team Jokers: Frenchie, Azah, Britini, Derek F Team Aces: Whitney, Brent, Derek X, Hannah Team Kings: Christian, Alyssa, Xavier, Sarah Team Queens: Claire, Kyland, Tiffany, Travis HOH comp was House of Cards: team captains had to build a 3-D puzzle on a platform held/steadied by their teammates, with occasional big card apparatus lowering from above to potentially knock down progress. I only saw those come down once (the same time for all of them). Frenchie won, earning first week safety for his team. Claire was second and Whitney was third, meaning Christian, Alyssa, Xavier, Sarah became the first Have-nots. Julie told then the season winner would get $750,000 this time! And she presented the much-hyped "double or nothing" offer to Frenchie: if he could land two big foam dice on a small table in 45 seconds, he'd earn his team a second week of safety. But if he accepted the challenge and failed, he'd give up this HOH to Claire, and lose this week's immunity for himself and his team. He declined the offer. But of course Julie made him try it "just for fun" (and because it was already budgeted time-wise), and he succeeded, landing the second die with just a couple seconds to spare. And that was that. Along the way we learned (or were reminded if we did pre-season research) Derek F is gay, Claire is bi, and Sarah has a girlfriend, and Frenchie, Tiffany, Whitney are parents. Sarah went by Sarah Beth but I'll see if that sticks conversationally before changing her name graphic below. Tiffany's pre-season conflicting job descriptions of CEO and phlebotomist were cleared up when she self-intro'd herself as having her own phlebotomy service. Job lies included attorney Xavier telling them he's a bartender, and forensic scientist Sarah/Beth told them she's a voice actress. Feeds begin after the west coast airing, there's no show tomorrow, and then we're on the permanent schedule of 8pm Sundays/Wednesdays/Thursdays. Feeds kicked on about 9.35pm Pacific/BB time, and the shouting they were all doing as Julie said good-bye had calmed down as they gathered in various rotating groups and continued their get-to-know-you convos. First feeds are always a lot to absorb and I'm not great at it, but what we do have is Frenchie told Tiffany that she's good, they're both parents, and he won't target minorities like some prior season(s), or women. He told her and Whitney he wants to target bro-jocks and potential showmancers, so yay for that! Derek F lost a hat that was in his luggage (likely confiscated for logos or whatever), Alyssa wasn't feeling well, Xavier seemed to be getting cozy with her, and they discussed BB21 racism and Paul's bad jury management. Alyssa told Frenchie she's more of a superfan than she was letting on to the rest of them. Frenchie didn't have his HOH room yet, and bed roulette happened here and there, with Christian often repeating his theory that still sleepers should double up with each other, as should sleep movers. Nicknames that may or may not stick were Annabelle for Sarah/Beth, Big D for Derek F, and Little Derek for Derek X. Brent, Christian, Travis seemed to bond like bro-jocks do, and Derek F and Hannah formed a tentative partnership. Frenchie finally got his HOH room around 12.25am (my timestamps are always Pacific/BB time unless otherwise noted) and they all gathered to ooh and ahh, like they do, especially at the pics of his three kids. He looked for his HOH letter but first HOHs usually don't get one, presumably because they just left home. They got him to put on the HOH room but he knows how we are about things like that, and he didn't wear it long. He was surprised to find tampons and maxi pads in the bathroom. Travis and Derek X talked about joining up with some of the guys, and agreed Kyland was already with them (which he may or may not be). Travis said he was worried about Brent and Christian being too close already, which was surprising since most of us grouped him in with them. So we're underway, some of them are already gaming, and it's looking like it could be a good season! Opening night feeds had far more blocks than usual (that tends to come later), but coming on the heels of a whopping 42.2% downtime (on top of 21.8% sleep time) for the recent Canada season, it wasn't too bad. Except there were a lot of quick strobing blocks, and the feeds music has changed to "TURN IT UP" song, which was really, really, ridiculously loud. Reminder, if you missed what came before, check my previous episode, always linked up top or from my season index, and get the feeds to catch anything you missed with Flashback!
